Özet
Satellitebased land surface temperatures (LST) are widely used for urban climate studiesparticularly at the areas where spatial distribution of meteorological data isnot adequate. This paper evaluates Moderate Resolution ImagingSpectroradiometer (MODIS) data to detect summer daytime and nighttime LSTs atİzmir city center and major summer resort areas around it. We investigatedwhether these summer resorts are cooler in summer than the İzmir city centerfor both daytime and nighttime temperatures for the 2003-2016 period. We havefound that Çandarlı and Dikili have higher LSTs during daytime than İzmir citycenter for the most of the period while İzmir city center has higher LSTs thanall the other summer resorts at nighttime. Mann – Kendall trend analysis showsthat there is statistically significant negative trend at the 1% significancelevel for Dikili and Eski Foça and 5% significance level for İzmir for daytimeLSTs. However, statistically significant positive trend is observed fornighttime LST’s at the 1% significance level for Çeşme, Dikili and Urla whileÇandarlı, Eski Foça and Yeni Foça has a positive trend at the 5% significancelevel. We attribute to nighttime positive trends of LSTs to urban heat islandeffect regarding urbanization and the increase of artificial surfaces in thoseareas.
