The Pedagogy of Silence: Spiritual Purification and Moral Education in Islamic Sufism and Japanese Zen Buddhism

Özet
This article examines the conceptions of spiritual purification and moral education in Islamic Sufism and Japanese Buddhism (particularly the Zen school) from a comparative perspective. The central research question addressed is: How do these two traditions, rooted in distinct cultural and metaphysical foundations, converge and diverge in terms of their pedagogical methods and aims? Accordingly, the study aims to illuminate the pedagogical principles of silence, contemplation, experiential learning, discipline and continuity, the teacher--student relationship, and holistic education, while drawing universal conclusions that may contribute to contemporary debates in educational theory. The rationale of the study lies in the fact that, although spiritual traditions are often approached from theological or mystical perspectives, their pedagogical functions have not been systematically compared. Thus, this research seeks to develop a theoretical framework for contemporary moral and character education by juxtaposing the educational philosophies of Sufism and Zen. Hermeneutical and comparative analysis were employed as the methodological approaches. Primary sources from both traditions as well as the academic literature were examined, and key concepts were interpreted within their respective contexts through the lens of educational sciences.
