Özet |
In the polarized world following the World War II, Turkey started to seek ways to be a part of the Western bloc due to the expansionist Soviet threat. For this reason Turkey developed a reaction against communism that was equated with Soviet Russia from the beginning of the Cold War. The opposition against the leftist movements which sometimes turned to a “witch-hunt” began in the last ruling period of Republican People’s Party (CHP) between the years of 1944-50 and reached its peak in the rule of Democrat Party (DP) 1950-54, especially in the process of Korean War and membership to NATO. The increasing pressure against the left in DP’s rule was not only derived from the threat perception but also Turkey’s efforts for finding place in Western bloc by denoting the rootless left ideology as a major threat. This essay examines DP’s approach to left movements at its first period in the light of the Republican Archive, Turkish Parliamentary Minutes, reports of US Embassy in Ankara and US Consulate in Istanbul as well as the newspapers of the referred time. |
