Özet |
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented the World Health Organization (WHO) with numerous challenges in pursuing its mandate as a global public health leader. From a critical legal perspective, the pandemic has exposed the power dynamics and limitations of the WHO in fulfilling its objectives. This chapter therefore critically examines some major challenges and successes of the WHO. One major challenge has been the unequal distribution of resources and information, which has inspired major criticism and led to disparities in access to essential supplies among countries. The issue has highlighted the unequal distribution of power in the global health system. Another is the WHO’s slow response and perceived ineffective coordination. These issues have also been criticised, raising questions about the WHO’S legitimacy and the role of international institutions in global health crises. The pandemic has also exposed the limitations of the WHO’s capacity, including resource constraints and inadequate staffing, emphasising the need for structural changes and increased support and funding for international institutions. The COVID-19 pandemic has provided an opportunity to reflect on the role and limitations of the WHO, highlighting the power dynamics, unequal distribution, and capacity issues faced by the organisation and the need for change and support within the global health system. |
