In this paper, a double-pass solar air heater (DPSAH) was simulated theoretically and tested experimentally under real weather conditions in Baghdad, Iraq. In this work, a DPSAH was fabricated with dimensions (100 × 50 × 15 cm) which contained a flat plate painted with black paint. The air enters the DPSAH above the flat plate and returns to the back side of the plate in order to increase air temperature as maximum as possible. Theoretically, the geometry of the model was created using SolidWorks and simulated using ANSYS Fluent. In the experimental test, a DPSAH was tested under real weather conditions for two days in May 2022 in Baghdad to validate the simulation setup as well as determine the thermal performance of the system. The results indicate that there is a good agreement between the simulation and experimental results with a difference of 6.5% in the thermal efficiency. Moreover, the experimental test showed that the maximum air outlet temperature was 71°C at noon when the mass flow rate is 0.0023 kg/s while the maximum outlet air temperature is 68 °C when the mass flow rate is 0.0057 kg/s. Also, the results show that the thermal efficiency of the DPSAH is 25% and 52% when the mass flow rate is 0.0023 and 0.0057 kg/s, respectively. |
