Özet
In this study, the overall structure cattle shelters in the towns and villages of the Kars Central District and the districts of Akyaka, Arpacay, Digor, Kagizman, Sarikamis, Selim and Susuz were investigated and the needs of animal producers on the ground of reconstruction or modernization of livestock shelters were evaluated. Data was collected from questionnaires conducted face to face with 412 livestock producers inhabited in 189 villages scattered through all eight districts. The surveyed cattle enterprises collectively had to a total of 16.066 head which corresponded to approximately 4% of cattle in Kars province according TUIK 2010 statistics. Among the housing types surveyed, the most commonly used shelter style was found to be "closed and connected barn system". According to the survey, this system would be chosen by animal producers since it has been seen as the most suitable, if a new barn is going to be constructed. The survey also revealed that closed and connected barn systems have been preferred most commonly (79.13%). However, the demand for a free circulation closed barn system (16.26%) is increasing and this increase is estimated to be around 14.32%. The animal husbandry in the Kars province and the entire region would benefit from modernization of the animal shelters and overcoming deficiencies identified in current barn systems. To achieve this goal, a close cooperation is required among the all affiliated organizations. Furthermore, due to the shortcomings and deficiencies of the "closed binded system barns", it is advisable that the new constructions or remodeling of the preexisting ones be done based on an "open barn system".
