Examining the Data Organization and Display Process for the Data Processing Learning Area in Statistics

Özet
The aim of this study is to investigate the data organization and display learning processes of eighthgrade students regarding the data processing learning area, and to present a comprehensive overview of what the students did during this process. The study, which employs a case study method, involves a total of 20 eighth-grade students (8 male and 12 female) attending a public middle school in a district of Kırşehir, Turkey, during the 2022-2023 academic year. Data were collected through interviews, document analysis, and researcher's field notes, and were analyzed using qualitative data analysis methods. Upon examining the tables drawn by the students, it was observed that nearly half of them did not draw tables, more students drew tally tables, but there was a scarcity of students who drew both frequency and tally tables. On the other hand, when the structure of the drawn tables was examined, it was found that none of the students provided titles for their tables. In addition, there were students who did not specify what the rows and columns represented. Furthermore, in the interviews conducted with the students, it was indicated that the primary reason for preferring to draw bar graphs was that they were easier and more familiar compared to other types of graphs.
