Examination of the physical properties of PMMA modified bitumen prepared with a mechanical mixer in laboratory environment

Özet
Purpose: Various polymers have been used as additives in bitumen modification for many years, and it is well known that they increase bitumen performance. In this study, it was aimed to examine the effect of adding polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to base bitumen with a mechanical mixer on the physical properties of base bitumen. Study design/methodology/approach: Within the scope of the study, PMMA was first added to base bitumen at ratios of 1, 3, 5 and 7% by weight under certain mixing conditions. Then, penetration and softening point tests were applied to the prepared modified bitumen samples. The effect of PMMA on the physical properties of base bitumen was evaluated through penetration, softening point and penetration index (PI) values. Findings: According to the experimental results, adding PMMA to base bitumen decreased the penetration value of base bitumen and increased the softening point value. In addition, PI values increase with increasing addition ratio. In line with these values, it was understood that as the PMMA ratio increased, the consistency of the bitumen increased, and its thermal sensitivity decreased.Originality/value: In studies in the literature, either a solvent or a shear mixer was used when adding PMMA to bitumen. In this study, adding PMMA directly to base bitumen with a mechanical mixer represents that bitumen modification can be done more economically under field conditions. In addition, to the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no other study examining the physical properties of PMMA-modified bitumen prepared using a mechanical mixer in a similar manner.
