| Struggling with diseases, particularly epidemic diseases, the new state having workforce deficit as one of the main problems was in need of underlining importance of health and making people conscious about health through various measures. An American doctor, Lorin Shepard wrote “Shhi Konuşuk (Health Talk)” giving health information in understandable language to public in 1927. Being in sale at Maarif Library in Istanbul, the book consists of 78 pages, sixteen chapters and index. Believing that welfare and stability comes with healthy individuals, Shepard attracts attention to necessity of health knowledge from the smallest unit of society to the biggest social unit and the contribution of it to the production. The first four chapters of the book consisting of sixteen chapters are about health knowledge and functioning and needs of body while chapters five, six and seven focus on physical, chemical and biological disorders affecting body and discuss temperature, humidity, hashish, nicotine, caffeine, fungi and skin diseases. Chapters eight to fourteen are on tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, Syphilis, Malaria, diphtheria, smallpox, measles, prulente meningitis, plague and typhus etc. Chapters fifteen and sixteen points out important points for pregnant women and children and give various recommendations. In this context, the paper aims to describe how health information was conveyed to people during initial years of republic with reference to book of “Sıhhi Konuşuk”. Screening model was essentially employed for the study and the book “Sıhhi Konuşuk (Health talk)” consisting of 78 pages was obtained and transcribed in present Turkish from Ottoman language. Then, the data concerning public health in the book were studied to conclude the study. Key words: Health, Disease, Public, Making Conscious, Education |
