Özet
According to Wilson and Reeder 1993) and Mitchell-Jones et al. 1999), the genus Spermophilus is distributed throughout southeast SE) Germany, Czecholovakia, SE Poland and SE Europe to European Turkey, Moldova and W Ukraine. Zima and Kral 1984) suggested that, because of karyological differences in the populations of this genus, Spermophilus xanthoprymnus is a separate taxon from Spermophilus citellus. Dogramaci et al. 1994) stated that S. citellus 2 n= 40) and S. xanthoprymnus 2n= 42) are distributed in the Thrace region and in Anatolia, respectively. The aim of the present study is to determine whether the diploid number of chromosomes is of taxonomic importance to separate S. citellus from S. xanthoprymnus, and may contribute to the distribution of the genus Spermophilus in Turkey. Specimens n= 27) were caught from five localities in Asiatic Turkey and one locality in European Turkey Fig. 1). Karyotypes were prepared from bone marrow using the colchicine±hypotonic citrate technique. The diploid number of chromosomes 2n), the fundamental number of chromosomes FN) and the fundamental number of autosomal arms FNa) were determined as well as metacentric, submetacentric and acrocentric centromere positions. The karyotype preparations and skins of the animals were deposited at the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Ankara University. The following results were obtained:
