| In field experiments, the effects of burning at different dates (1 Oct., 1 Nov., 1 Dec., 1 Feb. and 1 Mar.) and 0 and 4 kg N/ha on herbage yield and botanical composition of the understorey vegetation dominated by Hyparrhenia hirta under Quercus/Calycotome infesta/Cistus salvifolius scrub in Çukurova, Turkey in 1983-86. In the 1st year all burning treatments except in Oct. reduced total hay yields. Delaying burning decreased H. hirta herbage yield in the 1st year but not in subsequent years. Delayed burning increased the percentage of H. hirta and other grasses including Oryzopsis miliacea [Piptatherum miliaceum], Themeda triandra, Dactylis glomerata and Hordeum bulbosum but decreased the overall percentage of legumes in the total botanical composition.
