| This study deals with the etymology of the Kazakh word zertte- 'to examine', 'to scrutinize', 'to evaluate'. On the evidence of the Karakalpak verb izertle- 'to research', it is argued that the verb goes back to East Old Turkic eδär- 'to pursue', 'to follow'. Alternative analyses of the suffixes are discussed. |
