| A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted in 2004 to study the effect of potassium on wheat (Triticum aestivum) cv. Tir under NaCl stress (8 mmhos/cm). Potassium (K) was added to the soil at 8 levels (0, 100, 200, 300, 40, 500, 600 and 700 mg K/kg dry soil) under salt stress, while the non-saline condition was used as a control. NaCl significantly decreased the emergence percentage, dry shoot and root weights, shoot K+:Na+ ratio, contents of chlorophylls a and b and osmotic potential, while it increased the proline concentrations compared to the non-saline conditions in wheat seedlings. Potassium application had positive effects on salinity and alleviated the negative effects of salinity on wheat seedlings.
