Some Life Features of Nomadic Pastoral Goat Breeders in West Mediterranean Region of Turkey

Özet
The best and last samples of nomadic pastoral goat breeders can still be found in West Mediterranean region of Turkey. They raise their goats in extremely hard extensive conditions for their livelihood. This presentation aimed to determine some life features of these breeders. A face-toface survey has been applied to 134 nomadic pastoral goat breeders in the year of 2016. Descriptive statistics and tally analyses were employed to clarify the data. Breeders were categorised as follows; all of them were male, mean age was 46.72±0.85, the majority (84.33%) had primary education and 92.54% were married. All of them manage their business according to the nomadic pastoral life style. The main products they sell were goat and kid. They also sell milk (6.06%), cheese (39, 85%), dung (53, 73%) and hair (65, 67%). The number of mean family members was 4.45±0.15. The mean number of goats in a flock was 254.8±13.8 and the mean altitude where the goats were kept was 907.4±35.02 m. The majority of breeders lived in a place with a population less than 500 (58.96%) and mean distance to the nearest city centre was 43km. The migration distance between the winter and summer places was 50km and more for 30% of them. During this migration, 76.87% of the breeders travelled on foot together with their animals and 95.49% of them pass the border of their own cities. Only 5.97% of them possess the migrated grassland for the summer time. 93.13% used tent or tent-like shelter during summer time in the grazing highland. 32.82% were generated electricity from the solar panels for household necessities and 29.77% used satellite receiver for …
