Proje Konusu GEOMETRIC MORPHOMETRICS OF LATE ROMAN AMPHORA 1 FROM ELAIUSSA SEBASTE IN ANTIQUITY Aslı Doğan SARIKAYA*, Özkan SARIKAYA, H. Asena KIZILARSLANOĞLU Traditional typology revealed that archaeological artefacts contain many information: chronological sequences and cultural entities, through the definition of social, economic and cultural relationships. Because of limited information by typology recently many researchers applied to Geometric morphometrics to analyze shape and size variation. It is a quantitative techniques and statistical analysis of size and shape and defines the form of an object studied in any research field. In this study we evaluate both traditional typology and geometric morphometrics of amphoras which was typical product of Elaiussa Sebaste, (known as "Late Roman Amphora 1") is a city of Cilicia Tracheia at the current borders of Mersin Turkey. Landmark-based morphometric method was chosen as they are more effective in capturing information about the shape of amphora and lead to powerful statistical procedures for testing differences in shape. After defining and capturing homologous landmarks on Amphora, Generalized Procrustes analysis (GPA) was performed to superimpose landmark configurations which is important procedure because it removes variation due to differences in translation, orientation, and size. The mean shape of amphora and group differences were visualized and interpreted with traditional typology. This new approach of morphology in archeology can easily adopted for other kinds of artefacts like lithics, ceramics, skeletal, zooarchaeological and metalwork and promising to evolution of shape over space and time, and to provide information about material and cultural exchanges. Keywords: Elaiussa Sebaste, Amphora, Typology, Production, Geometric Morphometrics.
